Milk. Where’s your mustache?

If the phrase Got Milk? doesn’t elicit a picture of someone famous with a milky upper lip in your memory, then you didn’t live in the 90’s. It’s crazy to think that when creative agency Goodby Silverstein and Partners created the clever “Got Milk” campaign (sans mustaches) their tagline proved so sticky it was later attached on the mustache campaign, which originally started out with the line “Milk. What a Surprise” and then evolved into “Milk - Where’s your mustache?” I’m not sure if it actually had an impact on milk sales, however it made drinking milk sexy, humorous and mainstream via celebrities who were willing to sport a white mustache (made of YOGURT!) regardless of their gender. Little known fun fact: Of the first 7 ads, the one of Billy Ray Cyrus was voted most popular. Come again?

Getting back to the buzz surrounding these print ads, I had several fanatical ad collecting friends, covering their bedroom walls from floor to ceiling with the most coveted celeb pages. Some of the more popular ones were hard to come by, thus it was standard practice to furiously scan a gossip mag cover to cover multiple times in order to ensure you weren’t missing the golden ticket items. An innocuous pass along of said magazine without proper inspection always resulted in a shameless victory for your then friend (soon-to-be enemy).

Take a look now at some of the ads I was able to dig up on the internets… starting with the popularity chart topper once upon a time. The vest, the hair, the bedroom eyes - oh my.
