News You Can Use - Or Can You?

News You Can Use - Or Can You?

Do you ever think about whether or not the things we read/watch on cnn.com/cnn respectively are worth remembering?  Some are clearly noteworthy (see: economic crisis, global warming, the war), but others (see: Drew Peterson, the Octomom or the latest shark bite victim) do not need to take up valuable space in my brain’s evershrinking hard-drive.

Now I realize one could argue that I might be better off “wasting” these braincells on newstories versus whatever Perez Hilton tells me to care about, but we pick our poison.

No judging.

So I looked back at top news stories from Spring, 1990-1999, and randomly selected one per year.  Take a trip down Memory Lane and see if any of these events - deemed noteworthy at the time - register on your ‘I remember where I was when‘ radar.

NEWSFLASH:

1990

Paul Newman declares that all profits from his “Newman’s Own” line of products will go to charity.  This was after he signed the deal with McDonald’s.  Charity!

1991

Space Shuttle STS launched.  This one is particularly sad because no one cares about astronauts anymore.  Unless it’s an idiot celebrity (see Lance Bass) vying for a trip to the moon, shuttle launches barely register on the CNN ticker.

1992

Peru’s President Alberto Fujimori suspends his country’s constitution and dissolves congress.  This one falls into the category of Ishouldprobablyknowthis, but in my defense, I was 14 and entirely too focused on my student council election to worry about Peru.

1993

55th NCAA Men’s Basketball championship: UNC beats Michigan 77-71.  Worth noting as the same 2 states are battling it out this year (yes, I know it’s Michigan STATE, but close enough).  The only people who remember this one are UNC fans, Michigan fans and those sports-encyclopedia-for-brains weirdos.

1994

South Africa holds first interracial national election - Nelson Mandela elected.  We watched his inaguration speech in class.  This one I remember.

1995

Appeals court upholds woman’s plea to enter Citadel military academy.  Girl power!

1996

FBI arrests suspected Unabomer.  Now who doesn’t remember this?

1997

California US Appeals court upholds California’s Marijuana laws.  Despite the valiant efforts of Woody Harrelson and Phish-followers, still not legal.

1998

FDA approves Viagra, thus blessing the nation with those killer commericals featuring awkward couples dancing in their living room.

1999

U.S. Women’s soccer team beats China to win the world cup.  The only reason this registers for me is because of the whole shirt/no shirt scandal.  Gotta love America.  I challenge you to find another country capable of creating a scandalous newstory out of the image below.

How many do you remember?

99: Columbine high school shooting. I remember because I was going to primary (high) school the next year (American 7th grade).
