In Living Color’s Top 10 Characters

In Living Color’s Top 10 Characters

If you were looking for sketch comedy in the 90s, you turned to either SNL or In Living Color.  The latter, which was ghetto humor + Jim Carrey, was created by Keenan and Damon Wayans in 1990.  It’s famous for launching the careers of Carrey, Jamie Foxx, the Wayans family, David Alan Grier, and Jennifer Lopez.  Those actors spawned many memorable characters and recurring sketches, and below are my Top 10.

#10 - The Homeboyz

Whiz and Ice (Damon and Keenan) were the pitchmen for The Homeboyz Shopping Network, which was QVC for stolen goods.  Each sale was closed when the police were close.

#9 - Background  Guy

Jim Carrey plays “that guy” in the background during news or sports reporters.

#8 - Anton Jackson

Damon Wayans portrayed this homeless drunk who famously lived in a cardboard box.

#7 - Handi Man

Damon Wayans also played the role of Handi Man, a handicapped superhero who had a serious drooling problem and a midget sidekick.  One Handi Man sketch that caused a lot of contorversy was the one where his nemisis Doctor Naughty turned all handicap access ramps into skateboard parks.  That’s funny.  Here’s Handi Man joining the Justice Legion of America:

#6 - Head Detective

Damon Wayans portrayed the polic detective who was left with nothing but his head, hands, and feet after a terrible accident.  He’d fight crime with his partner like a real life Mr. Potato Head.

#5 - Wanda

Jamie Foxx plays Wanda, the world’s ugliest woman.  Most men do whatever it takes to get away from her, and here’s Jim Carrey’s dracula exposing himself to sunlight to escape:

#4 - Vera de Milo

Jim Carrey shines as a steroid-hungry female bodybuilder with a creepy voice and trademark pigtails.

#3 - Men On Film

Damon Wayans and David Allan Grier starred as the flamboyantly gay version of Siskel & Ebert.  Damon was always rocking a miniature hat and their catchphrase was “hated it.”

#2 - Homey D Clown

Damon Wayans played ex-con turned clown Homey, who frequently told kids “Homey don’t play dat” and then smacked them in the head with his tennis ball-filled sock.

#1 - Fire Marshall Bill

The character that put Jim Carrey on the map, Fire Marshall Bill was a looney fire marshall with a toasted face whose safety tips often led to him in flames.  His catchprhase was “Lemmme show ya something!”
