Craptastic Movies Volume 4: “Can’t Hardly Wait”

Craptastic Movies Volume 4: “Can’t Hardly Wait”

Back in 1998, a superbly average teen comedy starring a slew of wherehaveiseenyoubefore teeny-bops made its way to the local cineplex.

No one I know actually saw it in the theater, though everyone has since seen it thanks to Blockbuster and the FX network.

This little gem is all the more fun to mock thanks to the unfortunate title. Let me explain.

Though I’m still unclear of what, exactly, everyone in the film could hardly wait for, I think it’s safe to say that all of the wannabe stars of the film could hardly wait for their careers to take off. Sadly, they all probably assumed they were on their way to being Generation X’s very own Brat Pack.

Unfortunately the weak dialog, cookie cutter characters and utterly forgettable plot did not work to the “stars” advantage.

As a matter-o-fact, it appears as though most of them are still waiting…

Jennifer Love Hewitt

Talk about peeking early. Things started off so well with roles on “Party of Five”, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and multiple Maxim covers. You know she thought “CHW” would catapult her into the Sandra Bullock stratosphere. A dozen or ABC Family movies + an I’m Not Fat People Magazine cover = One Friday night drama on CBS. And I think she’s dating fellow 90s-peeker, Jaime Kennedy. Eeek.

Ethan Embry

Unfortunately Ethan was a little too Jacob and not enough Edward (a”Twilight” reference that you can pretend not to understand even though I know you do). Destined to be the sidekick and never the main attraction, Ethan has spent the rest of his career playing bit parts in films (see “Sweet Home Alabama”) and TV shows (”Law & Order”). Maybe if he had tried dating J-Love in real life. Would have at least garnered him a few US Magazine mentions.

Lauren Ambrose

Arguably the most respectable career of the bunch. This assumes that you use HBO shows and independent film as your barometer for “success”.  RIP “Six Feet Under”.

Seth Green

I have to say, I enjoy the occasional Seth cameo. Granted, he plays the same role in every film whether he’s physically in it, (see “The Italian Job”) or voice-overing, (hear “Family Guy”). Oddly, he is one of the few stars whose inability to age has actually worked against his career. But as long as they keep both of the above franchises going, he’ll have a job.

Peter Facinelli

For the longest time he was the guy who married Kelly Taylor. Then his abnormally pointed features and knack for pulling off white face makeup, led to his breakout role in this century’s teen phenomenon, the aforementioned “Twilight”. Except now, his role has evolved from the teen stud to the dad of the teen stud. So basically, he had the genre right, just needed to wait a decade or so for the right role.

Charlie Korsmo

Oddly, according to IMDB, Charlie’s last film was “CHW”. Guess I give him credit for knowing when to walk away.

Good stuff, but I, along with a bunch of other “wannabe” actors would happily take any of these lackluster careers you described. Wouldn’t you rather say you spent a few years in the minors and then got a few at bats in the bigs instead of having never done either? Sure you never won an NL batting title or the World Series, but you did do something a lot of other folks can never say. Charlie Korsmo might as well be Tom Hanks to me right now.
