In the late 90s, I got my first computer. It was a desktop and the size of small helicopter, but I loved it. I used if for exactly two purposes:
Microsoft Word (papers & such)
AND
AOL (You’ve Got Mail!)
Since then I’ve upgraded both the device itself (miraculously 1/8 the size of its predecessor) and the usage (if my computer blows up, I’m in trouble).
While I don’t miss the monstrosity that took up half of my dorm room, I am a bit nostalgic for the AOL soundtrack that cue’d up my foray into the online world. There was something so hopeful and mysterious about it. That sound represented all of the unknowns attached to this new cyberworld.
Now everything is fast. So instantaneous. And there’s no music. It’s all just so…ordinary.
Take a listen.

My roommate happens to be one of the last 5 people in America that still uses AOL email, so every night I get to hear that wonderful voice say “You’ve Got Mail”, it’s kind of therapeutic if you ask me.
