Normally the point of the “Then & Now” reflections is to acknowledge one of the following two scenarios:
1) Reliving our once favorite celebrities who have made the unfortunate turn from cover-of-my-slambook to star of D-list dating/rehab/dancing show (see any of the Backstreet Boys, Antonio Sabato Jr, etc).
OR
2) The much less common, but way more impressive 90s celebs who started average and have only improved with age (see Bon Jovi Syndrome).
But every so often, you come across a VSP (very special celebrity) who has managed to stay completely mediocre from start to finish. The kind of celebrity that makes you wonder why you’re not famous if they are.

Prime example? Pauly Shore. Never the feature in anyone’s childhood daydreams nor the star of anyone’s favorite film (unless you’re one of 2 fans of the Brenden Fraser bomb “Encino Man”), Pauly has managed to make a name for himself in performances such as “unruly bar patron” on 90210 (the original), “man in trunk” in the critically acclaimed “The Wash” and a very special espisode of “Sunset Tan” where he spent time with the quality folks at the tanning salon.
But you know what? He’s having the last laugh. Bloggers are talking about him. He still occasionally shows up in a shot in OK! Magazine (which everyone knows is the poor man’s US Weekly), but press is press, (Just ask Kathy Griffin).
Apparently, his latest venture, a reality show entilted “Adopted” landed on the respectable Showtime network (really Showtime?). In it, the former VJ takes to mocking the celebrity trend of heading to Africa to adopt a kid. The trend, and therefore mocking it, feels a day late & a dollar short, but recycling content is the Hollywood way, so why not?
According to strollerderby.com, each episode involves Pauly and orphans taking part in a series of day trips. No one gets adopted and everyone heads home to the orphanage. Hilarious!
The Vegas oddsmakers (the ones in my head anyway) are predicting Pauly for an upcoming season of “Dancing with the Stars” and/or “Celebrity Apprentice”. And you know what? I’d bet on him to win. Why? Because no one loves mediocrity more then fans of reality TV. America!

Consider me one of the two people who thinks Encino Man is the greatest movie of all time.

Then I guess that makes me the second Encino Man fan. And what about Bio Dome?!?
I have to say that I am disappointed by the authors lack of Pauly Shore love. He is, far and away, one of the most unique personalities of the eighties and nineties.

Encino man was great, but after Bio-Dome, there should have never been another movie ever made. Ever.

[...] Pauly may be a stretch for the Famous4Famous list, since he had a solid career in the early 90’s as an MTV host and movie healdiner. But if you look at anything he’s done in the past 12 years, it’s clear that people only pay attention because of who he used to be. Therefore he’s famous for being famous, not for being genuinely talented at anything. For more on Pauly, check out his feature on IceIceBabies. [...]
